Fridays Sole Survivor Adventure

Well I set out for the open road, no direction in mind, just headed out towards those mountains.
And you wouldnt believe what those mountain roads had in store for me.... in short, a whole lot of driving. (whole lotta lumps- bugs bunny anyone??)
Hours and hours of driving which thanks to my rediculous love of singing the miles away worked for me.
There were a few moments of note however. and I will list them for you now.
First off, i had set the goal of doing one thing a week that I hadnt done here, or at all, yet.
So how did I fulfill that goal?
Well I was driving along and saw this old ranch sign that was missing letters and the 'C' in ranch had come unhinged, was swinging upside down in the wind. So i got out to take a picture of it against the mountainous background. When I stepped out of the car I couldnt believe how quiet it was. The sort of quiet where your only option is to yell 'HELLO!!!!" as loud as you can and wait to see if a Badger responds. One did not. I hadnt seen another human being in at least 20 miles. I was really out in the middle of no where. So i decided it was the perfect spot to do something I had never done before. I go back to my car, pull out my guitar that I had brought for emergencies ( in case pan handling to get back home became necessary). I stand out in the middle of the road, straddling the center line, i strum my guitar and sing out "Look for me (I'll be around)" by the wonderful Neko Case. I had a beer, the one i brought for good measure (and in case I had to ride the rails to get back home), by my feet. I had to laugh at the thought of someone coming along at that moment. To see a crazy redhead singing in the middle of no where to no one and for no reason other than the pure randomness of it.
I have to say. it was well worth it. Sometimes I think a picture of that moment would be nice, but then i realize that might take something away from it. I do however have a picture of the Ranch Sign, that i have yet to get developed so i hope it turns out.

I got back into the car and headed on until i reached this little town called Guffy. Straight out of little house on the prairie. Had a general store that looked more run down that any main store should ever look. I was terribly disappointed when it was closed for the day. As was the fantastically warped Auto shop across the street. It had more trinkets defacing it than I could ever describe. and this old rusted out car from the 30s was sitting empty in front of it. So i took a picture of the rusty old car in front of the rusty old auto shop in this rusty old town. It really was a trip, i was figuring at any second some woman in a bonnet and an aprin would come out and start talking to me in Olde English. The type of old english spelled with an E.

Id say those two things were really the highlight of the drive. A herd of antelope on some plateau in front of a house designed to look like a castle follows as a distant third highlight. That was just weird. I had half a mind to drive over to the house and ask the owners just what was the matter with them. Though, if i were to have a castle house, I too would put it out in the middle of nowhere so that I could avoid the scorn.

I hope my pictures turn out. Only one place here develops 120 film, its expensive to get done, and as im saving for moving back I may have to wait a while before i can see if they turned out.
If so, i'll post some. Some day.

Its gonna be hard to do something new this week. Im flat as a flap jack broke so i'll have to be creative. Was gonna go to aspen but im just not up for it. what will I be? we'll see. I can say, I hope long distance driving isnt involved. I had enough last week.

  1. I love this picture... I have almost the same one from our trip recently...

I wish I would come around a bend the the road and a pretty lady was playing guitar and drinking a beer in the middle of it... it would make my day!! I get a happy smile thinking of it.
